Backups? We’re in the cloud now, do we still need backups?

Today’s backups are easy to set up. Once installed and configured they will back up all of your local data into a cloud service so that if your computer suddenly has a major problem, your data will be safe.

It is a similar story if you have local servers or NAS (network attached storage) drives. These devices are awesome for storing all of your company’s data, but much like computers, they can fail at a moment’s notice. Having a cloud backup in place is the safety net you need.

The Importance of Desktop and Server Backup Solutions

In our increasingly digital world, data is at the core of almost every operation. From personal files to critical business documents and emails. That’s why having a reliable backup solution for both desktop and server environments is not just recommended; it’s essential.

Why Backup Solutions Matter

Imagine waking up one morning to find your computer won’t start. Maybe it’s due to a hardware failure, a malicious attack, or even a simple human error that wiped out your files. Without a backup, all your data could be gone in an instant. This scenario can be even more devastating for a business. Imagine an issue that takes down a company’s website, customer databases, and internal documents. The financial and reputational damage could be immense.

Personal Data Loss

For individuals, losing data means losing irreplaceable photos, important personal documents, and even years of accumulated work. The impact can be significant, and the effort to recreate lost data, if possible, is time-consuming and often incomplete.

Business Data Loss

For businesses, data loss can halt operations, lead to financial losses, and damage client relationships. It can also result in legal ramifications, especially if sensitive customer data is compromised. A comprehensive backup strategy can mitigate these risks, ensuring that critical data is always recoverable.

Importance of Backing Up Microsoft and Google Data

At Murph Consulting, we hear “My email is on Google or Microsoft, and they backup my data, so this isn’t for me” Sorry, but this isn’t true. Google and Microsoft both will tell you to use a 3rd party solution to back up your data should anything go wrong.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace are essential tools for many businesses, providing email, document creation, and storage services. Backing up data from these platforms ensures that:

  • Emails and Documents Are Always Recoverable: In case of accidental deletion or corruption.
  • Data Compliance Is Maintained: Some industries have strict regulations regarding data retention and protection.
  • Business Continuity Is Ensured: Operations can continue seamlessly even if primary services are disrupted.

Best Practices for Effective Backups

  1. Automate the Process: Use tools and services that automate backups to minimize human error.
  2. Test Your Backups: Regularly test backup restorations to ensure data integrity and reliability.
  3. Implement Multi-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your backup accounts to protect against unauthorized access.

Conclusion

Data is a valuable asset that requires protection. Whether you’re an individual safeguarding personal memories or a business ensuring operational continuity, implementing robust desktop and server backup solutions is crucial. Don’t wait for a data loss disaster to strike. Invest in comprehensive backup strategies now, including backups for cloud-based services like Microsoft and Google, to secure your digital life and business. By understanding the critical importance of backups and implementing effective solutions, you can ensure that your data remains safe, secure, and always within reach.

This month, Murph Consulting turned 18. I cranked up Alice Cooper's "I'm 18" and Skid Row's "18 and Life" to get the vibes going. My company is now old enough to vote, get a tattoo, and get married, all without parental consent. Watch out, world!

In all seriousness, the passing of another year of entrepreneurship and running a successful business always feels like a good time to reflect. Since we started in 2007, we've assisted nearly 600 small businesses and residential clients. Businesses in every industry, ranging in size from the solopreneur to 100 employees. There’s no company we’ll say “you’re too small for us to help”, and that gives me great joy. Small businesses need tech and CyberSecurity support, and we’ve got their backs.

Speaking of, it's October again, and you all know what that means, right? The Mets have failed us, and the Islanders, Jets, and Rangers are about to. It's also Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Every small business should be implementing some basic security measures by now. It's easier and more affordable than you think it is, and definitely cheaper than dealing with the fallout of something drastically bad happening to your business.

How's your password game? Do you use strong passwords on all the sites you visit, or are they all slight modifications of one word, like your kids or pets' names or birth dates?

If it's the latter, let's chat. You should be using a password manager. They are easy to use, create complex passwords for you that you no longer need to remember, and keep them all safe for you. I can't remember the last time I had to click on the "forgot your password" link for any site, and I love that for me.

A password manager is just one of the seven software we feel EVERY small business should have in place to help keep them protected in 2025. We’ve packaged these up together neatly and made them affordable for the small businesses we will always support.
